Acne affects a significant portion of the population. 8% of adults between 25–35 and 3% between 35–44 continue experiencing acne well beyond adolescence. It does not discriminate by age, gender, or lifestyle.
So, what is acne?
Acne manifests through various lesions on the face and body, including macules, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts — commonly called spots. Some lesions cause scarring, and acne-prone skin often becomes congested with blackheads and blocked pores.
Acne is an inflammatory skin disease affecting the pilo-sebaceous gland. An official diagnosis requires four indicators: increased sebum production, elevated cell turnover, buildup of Propionibacterium (P-Acne bacteria), and skin inflammation. The condition is graded into four categories, from mild to severe.
Hormones — specifically androgens stimulated during puberty — are the primary cause of acne. While common in adolescence, hormonal imbalances from stress, contraceptive pills, pregnancy, menopause, and certain medications can trigger acne at any age.
What are the myths about acne?
- Acne only occurs during puberty — FALSE. It affects all ages and genders.
- Poor hygiene causes acne — FALSE. Sufferers typically cleanse very thoroughly.
- Acne is contagious — FALSE. It cannot be passed from person to person.
- Acne appears only on faces — FALSE. It also occurs on necks, chests, backs, and other areas.
- Diet affects acne — No conclusive scientific evidence, though some report dairy and fatty foods worsen symptoms.
What can be done about acne?
Acne is highly treatable with the appropriate professional skincare products and treatments. Research shows that 98% of dermatologists report patients discontinue treatment if they see no improvement within four weeks — so choosing the right approach from the start matters.
While numerous over-the-counter products exist, switching between unsuccessful treatments can irritate skin further and cause additional damage. Severe grade 4 acne requires dermatological treatment. For grades 1–3, professional skincare products and clinic treatments can make a significant difference.
At Pure Skin, Kirsa offers a personalised assessment to determine the grade and type of your acne, then creates a tailored treatment plan combining the most effective professional solutions. A free consultation is always the first step.
